Sun Rising from the West

This is explained in the Sunnah. Al-Bukhaari (3199) narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said to Abu Dharr, when the sun set: “Do you know where it goes?” He said: Allaah and His Messenger know best. He said: “It goes and prostrates beneath the Throne, and it asks for permission, and permission is given to it. But soon it will prostrate and it will not be accepted from it, and it will ask for permission and permission will not be given to it, and it will be said to it: ‘Go back from where you came.’ So it will rise from its place of setting, and that is what Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning): “And the sun runs on its fixed course for a term (appointed). That is the Decree of the All‑Mighty, the All‑Knowing.’”

After the death of Prophet Isa ﷺ, killings, corruption, and adultery will start again. Right then, Allah azza wa jal would send wind which will suffocate the believers and they will die. Only the worst of the mankind would be left on earth. The Prophet ﷺ said that the people would see the sun rising from the west and the Beast would come out and kill them. Allah will bring a man from Abasina named Dhus Wakatain. This man will tear down Kaba brick by brick and nobody will find out about it because people will stop performing Hajj and Umrah around that time. People will not know Allah and will say that their grandfathers used to say this name. Qiyama will happen on a Friday between Fajr and Sunrise.

The first of the signs of Doomsday is the sun’s rising from where it sets and the emergence of Dabbat al-ard to people at forenoon. Of them, whichever appears first will immediately be followed by the other.) [Muslim, Abu Dawud]

It seems likely that the Smoke will appear after the killing of the Yaʾjūj and Maʾjūj tribes, and after the destruction of the Kaʿbah.[14]

This will happen sometime after the passing away of ʿĪsā (ʿalayhi al-Salām) and perhaps after the appearance of the Smoke.

Allāh’s Messenger (sall Allāhu ʿalayhi wa sallam) said, “The first (of the truly extraordinary) signs will be the sun rising from the place of its setting and the coming of the Beast in the morning, whichever of these two happens first, the other will soon follow.”[15]

These events will go hand-in-hand. When the sun rises from the place of its setting, the door to repentance will be closed, the profession of faith will no longer be accepted, and the Beast will be sent to mark mankind.[16]

Allāh’s Messenger (sall Allāhu ʿalayhi wa sallam) said, “Once three signs occur, the soul will not benefit from believing if it did not believe before: the Dajjāl, the Dābba (the Beast), and the sun rising from the West.”[17]

Abu-Musa Al-Ashari narrated that the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم said, “Verily Allah extends his hand at night so that the sinners of the day may repent and verily extends his hand during the day so that the sinners of the night may repent, (He will keep on doing this) as long as the sun does not rise from the West.” ( Sahih Muslim)

Safwan bin Assal narrated the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said, “Allah has built a door of repentance where the sun sets, its breadth requires 70 years journey for foot passenger or 40-70 years for a rider. It will not be closed as long as the Sun does not rise from the West.” ( Tirmizi)

Ibn Hajar Al-Asqalani has reported many Hadiths which prove that the door of repentance will remain closed till the Day of Judgement and thereafter writes, ”These narrations give strength to one another, agreeing completely in that once the sun rises from the West, the door of repentance will be closed and will not be opened thereafter.” (Ibn Hajar Al-Asqalani’s book Fat’h Al-Bari)

Abdullah bin Abu-Owfa reported: I heard the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم say, “Verily a night equivalent to three of your nights will come upon people. When it comes, those who engage themselves in worship during the night will recognize it. A person will stand in prayer, read a section of the Quran and then go to sleep. Thereafter, he will wake up, stand in prayer and read a section of the Quran, then go to sleep. While this condition remains, the people will begin to shout, scream and call one another. They will say, “What is this?” With fear, they will run to the mosque. To their surprise, they will see that the sun has risen from the West. When it reaches the middle of the sky, it will return and set in the West.” He said صلى الله عليه وسلم , “That is when becoming a believer (in Islam after witnessing this Sign) will no longer be of benefit (because after the sun rises from the West, Allah will no longer accept declarations of faith ).” (Ibn Kathir’s book Al-Bidaya wa An-Nihaya)

Narrated by Abu Huraira, “Allah’s Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم said, ‘The Hour (of Resurrection) will not come until the sun rises from the West. When the people witness this, everyone who will be living on the face of the Earth will develop faith ( believe in Allah), but that is when believing will no longer be of benefit…” (Sahih Bukhari)

Abu Huraira said: “Three things that once they occur, the soul will not benefit from believing (in God) if it did not believe before … (verse 6:158): the Dajjal (Anti-Christ), Daabba (Beast), and Sun rise from the West.” (Tirmizi and Al-Albani)

There are two main possibilities:

1. Around the time of the Dajjal.

2. After the descent of Jesus (peace be upon him) from Heaven, but before the last three Major Signs [Pleasant Wind (Rapture), Destruction of Ka’ba, and the Fire].

What is clear based on several Hadiths is that the Daabba (which will mark the forehead of every human being as either a believer or as a non-believer) will come immediately after or immediately before the Sun rising from the West.
